  1. I understand the need to have healthier options for our students in our school. Obesity is becoming an epidemic in our schools. I worry about the income we will loose if we switch to healthier options in our vending machines. Our budget will suffer. Can we come to a compromise by having options that would be appealing to our students like gatorade and granola bars?

  2. Obesity is a big problem in America right now. It is so sad to see this problem in our school system. It is important for children to learn how to eat right and exercise at an early age. I think that exercise is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Even getting outside and exploring things can help students take a step towards healthy living. To help students get active, teachers need to provide them with more activities that incorporate kinesthetics. Students need to be given opportunities to move around and get active in and out of the classroom. This will get them motivated to exercise and begin a healthy lifestyle.

  3. The above comment is from the teacher role. To decrease the obesity rate in schools while maintaining the budget, teachers need to incorporate more lessons with exercise and hands on activities. Allowing students to exercise more is an easy and cheap way to decrease obesity in the schools.

I think that the curriculum need to be revised. The school board need to include in the lesson plan the effects of obesity, the right things to eat and ways in which a child can remain healthy. I also think that PE need some tweaking here and there.Give a child a Dance O Rama let them burn off some calories to some music and still have fun. I took a look at my child's lunch menu and it made me cry. The school is killing my child slowly. The breakfast and lunches are bombarded with fat. We need to put our heads together and help our children.

  5. The four causes of obesity in children are:
    1) Environment
    2) Sedentary Lifestyle
    3) Poor Diet
    4) Genetics
We can change all of these factors besides our genetics. The reality is if we do a good job with their environment, sedentary lifestyle, and poor diet the fact that they are genetically predisposed to weigh more will not have such a great effect on their mental and physical health.

  7. As a principal....

I understand the need for new health and exercise nutrition. At the same time, the revenue we generate from those sales support things like new curriculum. We have to find a balance of having healthier choices and maintaining our budget.

  8. As a parent more physical education should be put in effect. Playing on the playground shouldn't be considered as physical education. Take out all junk food in vending machines will help.

Healthier food is more expensive and with schools being cut they can't afford to change out vending machines to healthier snacks.

  9. as a parent i agree with you it is so tempting having all that junk what good is it doing in the schools AND the bad thing is parents need to get educated and stop feeding their kids that nasty junk. .. putting the kids on the playground to me seem to be an easy and cheap way out of the process of a healthier process to shut the parents up. At list in some schools sodas are not available to the students now Gatorade is available.

  10. As a teacher, I believe we can all come to a compromise on how to deal with the increase of the rates of obesity. We can incorporate health into many of our lessons plans teaching our students to make healthier choices while still teaching math, science, and reading. I agree with the principal that we might loose income by providing healthier food options but we can make up for that lost by holding fund raisers and events. For example, we can have students participate in fun hat day where they will be allowed to wear a fun hat for a dollar. These small changes can help us all to agree on making our youth healthier.

  11. As a principal, I think that if we were able to supply our vending machines with lowfat options or replacing candy bars with trail mix for example it would make a difference. I think that also it's all about effective health education. If we show students what can happen if they don't start looking at what they are eating or if they stop excersicing it would make a difference. I don't like that in this scenario I have to look at the students being the funders of supplies for their education from fattening foods. I think that we need to look at other ways to fundraise that doesn't include selling chocolate bars. I think that we can also look to the community and small businesses for sponsorship in exchange for their ad in a school newsletter or at a school sports event.

  12. I was surprised how many children are not getting any recess. I feel it is important for all students to have at least fifteen minutes a day to just play, and re-group. This can help with obesity and social interaction within the classroom and school.
When I ask some students why they are so tired, many of them spent their free time on the computer, watching reality TV, or playing video games.
Many students do not get the chance to play outside; getting the benefits of the fresh air, the endomorphins produced by running, playing, and laughing.
Life is about balance and everything in moderation; so eat well, get sleep, study, and play at recess.

  13. it is a shame that it isn't a bigger budget to help our children with increase time of physical playtime.Just take a look at the meals in the school.Sometimes i can't even tell what they are serving.
It is sad that after school our children do not care to go outside and run around with their friends or just jump in the swimming pools.Use the PlayStation for playing tennis not for army games!!
